I bought this chess set for my girlfriend's birthday to go with a chess board I made her. The squares were 1 ¼". The pieces are a little big for the board. They would be fine if they were round based, but being square, makes it so they take up most of the board and it can be a little bit of a challenge to move them around the board. It also takes some getting used to remember which piece is which.
My girlfriend loves them though because she loves cats [and has two :( ]. They are very detailed though some of them have almost an evil appearance to them.
